A Christian?

I heard that Christians were new creations,
Changed by God internally;
So I decided to watch you closely,
Hoping that Jesus I might see.

As people would tell dirty jokes
I’d immediately look at you;
It seemed you were always laughing,
and would even tell a few.

I heard you using vulgar words,
Even taking God’s name in vain;
It didn’t take long to realize
That our talk was much the same.

You spoke of entertainment,
Places you’d go, movies you’d see;
But despite their worldly content
You enjoyed them just like me.

How quickly you’d talk about others,
Throwing gossip into the breeze;
I thought, “with Christians like you
Who needs enemies?”

You claimed to be faithful in church,
But true commitment I didn’t see;
After all, your monthly attendance
was just a little more than me.

Through what I’ve seen, I must say
If your commitment to Christ is true,
Then I haven’t any reason to worry,
I must be a Christian too!

"Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands,
having this seal: The Lord knows those who are His,
and, Let everyone who names the name
of Christ depart from iniquity."
