On September 10, 1964 he recorded his first single, "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" (written by Willie Dixon) with John Paul Jones (later with Led Zeppelin) on bass.

The band made its stage debut in London, England on March 3, 1967. They made their US debut at the Fillmore East in New York City on June 22, 1968. Stewart had stage fright and sang the first song from behind the speaker cabinets at the back of the stage.
Stewart was with the band for 2 albums until a disagreement over the direction the band should take. He left to pursue both a solo career and sing with The Faces.
1970-1975
Their first album with Rod as lead singer was released on March 21, 1970. They played their last show together at Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, New York on October 12, 1975.

On October 2, 1971 both "Maggie May" and "Every Picture Tells a Story" on both the UK and the US charts. The single stayed at #1 on both charts for another 4 weeks. The album stayed at #1 in the UK for another 3 weeks and in the US for another 6.

Still with the Jeff Beck Group, he signed a solo contract with Mercury Records on June 6, 1969.

On December 31, 1977 he gets Best Solo Male Singer award from the Daily Mirror.
In Germany he won several music and showbiz prizes like the "Berolina" 1988, the "Goldene Europa" 1991 and the "Goldene Kamera" in 1993.
In 1989 and again in 1991 Rod was nominated for a Grammy award for best 'Male Pop Vocal' but didn't win.
He was nominated for a Juno (Canadian music awards) for International Entertainer of the Year in 1990. At the ceremony in Toronto (rumour was that he agreed to perform because he was seeing somebody in Toronto at the time) he sang "Downtown Train". He lost to Melissa Etheridge.

What's the story behind "Never Give Up on a Dream" from "Tonight I'm Yours"?
Terry Fox was a young Canadian who lost a leg to cancer. In order to raise money for research he decided to run across Canada in 1980. He started in Newfoundland but unfortunately his run was stopped in Ontario when he became ill. He died in 1981. Rod wrote the song in Terry's honour.
Is it true that he's donated the royalties in perpetuity from "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" to charity? If so, why?
